Phil Foden brace destroy Man Utd as Man City register comeback derby win

Phil Foden double sinks Man Utd as Man City register comeback derby win

Manchester city  once again claimed local bragging rights over Manchester United with a 3-1 comeback victory at the Etihad on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford silenced his critics by giving United an early lead with an absolute thunderbolt but Phil Foden produced his own moment of derby day magic in the second half to level it up before adding a second to complete the turnaround. Erling Haaland added a third in stoppage time to put the icing on the cake.

The result means that Pep Guardiola’s side have closed the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to one point and they are now four points ahead of third-placed Arsenal, who face Sheffield United on Monday.

It is also a fresh dent to United’s hopes of a top-four finish and means that Erik ten Hag has lost four of his five Manchester derbies as manager of the Red Devils

City wanted a penalty less than five minutes into the match when John Stones went down in the box from a Casemiro challenge but referee Andrew Madley and VAR were not convinced – and there was more misery for the hosts – as Rashford’s rocket from 25 yards smashed into the top of the net to give United a 1-0 lead.

Andre Onana was then forced into two key saves to deny Foden as City pushed for an equaliser and United looked vulnerable almost every time the champions went forward with Rodri’s shot from the edge of the box turned behind and Onana getting down low to deny him again after the half-hour mark.

There was a massive chance for Haaland just before half-time as Foden nodded the ball across the face of goal and despite timing his run perfectly and leaping to connect with it, he somehow volleyed over from two yards in one of the biggest blunders of the season.
