Manchester United ended their run of three consecutive defeats in all competitions and won in the Premier League for the first time since August 26 as a masterful volley from Bruno Fernandes sent Burnley to the bottom of the table at Turf Moor.
Portugal playmaker Fernandes met a searching long ball from defender Jonny Evans and finished emphatically from a tight angle on the stroke of halftime to give his side their first away points of the season with the only goal of a nervy victory.
Evans, making his first start for the club since 2015 after rejoining United during the summer, thought he had headed the opener before Fernandes struck but was denied by a VAR decision that deemed Rasmus Hojlund had been offside from United`s corner.
Seeking their first win of the season after picking up their first point with a draw at Nottingham Forest on Monday, Burnley bossed possession and struck a post through Zeki Amdouni during the first half.
Visiting goalkeeper Andre Onana had already thwarted Amdouni by then with a fine save, plunging to his right to prevent the Switzerland international`s free header from reaching the far corner of his net.
Hojlund, who scored his first goal for United in Wednesday's 4-3 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, showed frustration as he narrowly missed Diogo Dalot's inviting shot shortly after the restart.
The result moves United into eighth place ahead of their two games in the week against Crystal Palace, one of the better teams on the table, in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and in the league on Sunday.
Burnley are two points behind 17th placed Bournemouth and will play three away games in eight days, with the Carabao Cup at Salford City starting on Tuesday and Newcastle United on Saturday. They then visit fellow high-profile newcomers Luton Town on his October 3rd day.
